Council # 6020
was founded on Dec. 5 1967, but changed its’ name to POPE JOHN
PAUL I COUNCIL in 1988. Founded in Huntington Beach, we serve
both the St Vincent de Paul and St Bonaventure parish
communities. Currently our membership is over 330, but we
always can use more good Catholic men!
Brother Knights
from Council #6020 have been serving both Parishes in many ways
- serving as hospitality ministers or ushers or Eucharistic
ministers or lectors at Sunday masses, serving coffee and donuts
on Sunday, attending weekly or monthly Perpetual Adoration,
volunteering for the Parish Festivals or Parish BBQs, helping
with the Thanksgiving and Christmas food boxes or baskets,
conducting a Christmas toy collection and party for needy kids,
providing Friday night (Lenten) dinners, preparing pancake
breakfasts and Italian sausage sandwiches for the church
community, hosting a Casino Night fundraiser and actively
supporting Pro-Life functions.
Each year the
Council sponsors a Seminarian Dinner, on the Saturday before
Mother’s Day, providing $500 to $1000 scholarships to deserving
Seminarians and Religious from our Parishes! Last year (2004),
at our 23rd Annual Seminarian Dinner, we were able to
give eleven (11) such scholarships, totaling $9000. Over the
last ten (10) years we have given 60 scholarships, totaling
$45,000.
Every year in
October, our council supports the National 'MR' Drive (for the
mentally handicapped children) by raising money through the
giving away of tootsie rolls. We also support the Fairview Home
for the mentally retarded with weekly visits by our Brother
Knights. On Sundays, we help by taking the handicap people to
Mass!
The last few years our Council has supported the Orange County
Activity Director’s Assoc. (OCADA) in conducting the annual
“Senior Games” – Olympic style games for the ‘Senior Citizens’,
that are confined to Retirement Homes and Assisted
Living Homes in Orange County.
In January we
conduct the local 'Youth Free Throw' contest for National
competition. Annually, we participate in the 'Special Olympics'
for the handicapped kids, held in Los Angeles area. Each year we
join other Knights’ councils in conducting a “Day of Sharing” –
a mini-carnival for the developmentally disabled children and
their families. We support fund raising programs that provide
assistance to these children and their families. Of course, we
will be in the annual Huntington Beach 4th of July Parade.
As you can see
we provide services and help, across a very broad spectrum --
the needy, the poor, the youth, the ill, the mentally
handicapped, the elderly, the handicapped, etc.
Besides being a
service organization, we are also a warm, friendly fraternal
group, banded together to provide for the spiritual and material
welfare of our membership. We are very “Family Oriented”, with
many of our events, involving the spouses and family members!
We
need St Bonaventure men. We need St Vincent de Paul men!
Do something good for yourself,
your family and your community. Join “These Men they call
Knights”!
